Greetings from the President

First and foremost let me thank you for the vote of confidence to elect me as president of the XIII. ESA Congress hosted by the Centre for Agricultural and Applied Economic Sciences of the University of Debrecen, Hungary between 25-28 August 2014. This confidence means a great deal of responsibility as our congress organizing team intends to arrange a scientific event of high prestige to focus on the crucial scientific issues determining the future development of agriculture both in Europe and worldwide.

As ESA congress has not been held in Central and Eastern Europe for a long time our institution feels privileged to host such an important event.

From the perspective of the scientific life of integrating Europe the rapid progress and the effective development of scientific, cultural and other social relations among the countries of the region, besides the improvement of political and economic relations, are crucially important and they can provide support for and give significant impetus to the development of other areas.

The University of Debrecen is one of Hungary’s five research-elite universities, offering the widest choice of majors in the country for 35,000 students at 15 faculties. The institution has always paid special attention to fostering international relations and as a result 3,500 international students from 76 different countries of the world have chosen our university for their studies. On the basis of QS World Rankings’ report the University of Debrecen is ranked at 417th place out of 20,000 universities in world comparison.

The Centre for Agricultural and Applied Economic Sciences is a determinant organizational unit of the University of Debrecen comprising two faculties: the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management and the Faculty of Applied Economics and Rural Development and a Research Institute. In the different units of the Center extensive research programs are carried out in the field of crop production, water and environmental management, agro-chemistry, soil sciences, plant protection, applied ecology, horticulture, animal sciences, food science, economy and other disciplines.

Our aim with the program of the XIII. ESA Congress is:

  • to introduce the latest scientific results in all the three divisions of the congress
  • to identify new scientific trends and put forward recommendations to political decision-makers
  • to promote scientific collaboration and improve cooperation activities
  • to give an overall picture of Hungarian plant cultivation and present the research activities in the fields of plant cultivation and other interdisciplinary fields which are carried out at the University of Debrecen
  • to facilitate the integration of researchers from Central and Eastern European countries into the ESA

I sincerely hope that our concept regarding the goals of the congress can be further improved by the proposals coming from the ESA Secretariat and ESA members. For this reason I would encourage all of you to support us with your ideas in order to finalize the conference program to all of our satisfaction.

Prof. Dr. Péter Pepó
ESA President
Vice president of the Center for Agricultural and Applied Economic Sciences, University of Debrecen
